PITTSBURGH -- Organizers of Pittsburgh 250 -- the city's official 250th birthday anniversary -- have been celebrating all year with events throughout the area.
The latest is called Pittsburgh Celebrates 250 -- a weekend kick-off for a two-month party that starts Oct. 3 and 4. A preview was shown Thursday along the Monongahela River at Station Square.
Colcom Foundation is the title sponsor and WTAE is the media sponsor of the event, which will celebrate the city's past, present and future. Zambelli fireworks, concerts, flyovers and a flotilla full of historic vessels will all be involved.
Also, Point State Park will be the end point for the PNC Legacy Trail Ride which follows the Great Allegheny Passage, a 185-mile series of hiking and biking trails between Pittsburgh and Cumberland, Md.
Signups for the bike ride are being taken now at bike250.org.
"I think there's a wonderful opportunity for us, as well as the people who don't live here, to recognize Pittsburgh for what it is," said Jim Rohr, head of the Pittsburgh 250th Anniversary Commission."
